May I Please Have A HUG?

Two children run towards each other. They do not know each other for long, but they smile and hug each other as hard as they can. They are not old enough to read, much less scientific articles, to know how important a hug is. They just hug each other. They hug animals and toys. They give and receive the love they have inside.

Hugging: the truest form of giving and receiving.”

Carol ‘CC’ Miller

Speaking of a sincere hug, it is a simple gesture and makes you feel so good. It is something that does not need scientific articles to prove to you how good to hug and be hugged is. You feel that soul warmth that is given to you. At the same time, receiving it, you give it back.

Hugs may be silent, yet they speak volumes.

Carol ‘CC’ Miller

In silence, hugs speak to you about the joy, comfort or support a person gives you. It tells you that someone is there to make you happy or to comfort you because he understands your pain.

It gives you something beyond words, beyond scientific explanations, beyond what we seek to tease out with our minds. However, what we feel when hugging does not come from our minds but from the mind of the heart.

Is a hug important?

Using a dictionary, hugging is described as when two people put their arms around each other and hold them tightly because they like or are pleased to see each other. Yet, I prefer a definition I found some time ago, written by Romanian author Petru Racolța. He says that a hug is an act of “two hearts holding hands warmly

A hug can be a way to show someone you care, to express affection and intimacy, or to comfort someone.

Human touch is important, and its importance can be seen in the development of healthy babies and adults.

Studies confirm that touch has important health benefits and researchers have long been interested in the benefits of hugging. Because that can be easily manipulated or tracked, several experimental research studies have explored the benefits of hugs.

When you do not get enough physical touch, you can become anxious, stressed, or depressed. As a response to stress, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. It can cause negative effects on your immune and digestive systems because heart rate and blood pressure are increasing, and muscle tension and breathing rate go up.

A hug makes you feel good because hugging causes the brain to release oxytocin. Released from our pituitary gland oxytocin is an important hormone that increases human bonding and connection to others.

Therefore, oxytocin plays an important role in the relationship between mother and child, creating a unique bond between the two.

Increasing trust, loyalty and feelings of closeness, hugging reduces cortisol levels leading to decreased anxiety, stress and depression.

Hugs should be available at the medical stores 24/7. Sometimes, they are the best healers for almost everything.

The effects of the hug last longer than the hug itself. When hugged, you do not feel alone. Moreover, you feel loved and safe.

  • Hugging reduces blood pressure, and thus is good for your heart.
  • It helps reduce the severity of the common cold. When hugs are frequent, the severity of infection is reduced.
  • It boosts the immune system. Moreover, the longer hugs are, the more powerful they are. It is said that hugs that last for 20 seconds or longer are the most powerful.

Every hug is important because every hug counts and does not cost you a dime. You just never know when someone needs to feel safe and loved. By hugging more, we might be able to understand how hugging interventions could play out in the real world. Do not wait to hear: “May I Please Have A HUG”? Hug the people you love!

Love, Manuela
