Women’s Cave

Women’s Cave, also known as Woman’s Cave, is a popular and frequently visited cave located in Baia de Fier commune, Gorj County, Romania.

Spanning approximately 7000 meters and organized into four levels, it is the first cave in Romania to be equipped with electric lighting. Historically, the cave served as a shelter for children and women during times of war when the men would go off to fight.

A notable feature of the cave is the Small Dome, which displays a Gothic dome-like appearance formed by the gradual buildup of calcite over time. Other notable rooms include the Hall of the Altar, the Wave of the Altar, the Pulpit, the Great Candelabra, and the Bloody Rock, named after the iron oxide deposits.

Other attractions within the cave include the Woman’s Veil, the Great Pools, the Petrified Waterfalls, the Stone Lace, the Gate, the Guano Hall, and the Turk’s Hall. The Bear Gallery holds a significant collection of animal skeletal remains, while the Mousterian Hall has yielded cultural artefacts from eras predating our own.

Women’s Cave is also known for the discovery of completely petrified cave bears.
