Sorcova

Sorcova is an old Romanian popular custom practised on the morning of January the 1st.

This custom is spread throughout the entire country and is practised mainly by children.

Children touch the adults with a stick while saying the verses of “sorcova”. That stick decorated with artificial flowers of different colours plays the role of a “magic wand”. It seems to be endowed with the ability to transmit health, youth and wealth to those who listen. Verses of sorcova are very suggestive in this regard. The text, reminiscent of a spell, merely reinforces its movement.

Depending on the region of the country, there are short or long variants of sorcova, but they all have a common core. It is said that receiving “sorcova” in your house is a symbol of bringing luck inside of it, for you and your loved ones.

“In northern Transylvania, children go with sorcova from house to house, wishing health in exchange for local delicacies (cozonac, colac, apples, nuts).”
