Gen Z (2023)

Gen Z” is a Chinese drama compelling portrayal of traditional Chinese medicine and culture, offering insights into the understanding and preservation of ancient healing practices.

Sun Toutou’s upbringing in an orphanage and her limited education only up to primary school did not hinder her from standing up against injustice, although, her actions were not always flawless (throwing food delivery orders or disrespecting memorial rites).

Despite her tumultuous past and troubled behaviour, a turning point came when she was saved and encouraged by Prof Ren Xin Zheng, a distinguished professor at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to pursue the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

His initiative in establishing a traditional Chinese medicine class aimed to nurture individuals capable of authentically carrying on the teachings of TCM. Toutou’s remarkable resilience and dedication shone through her diligent work, her defence of abused women, and her selfless acts of bravery, including shielding her Shifu class from harm and assuming responsibility for others’ actions.

While Western medicine looks at the disease, TCM looks at the person.

TCM examines the man who is sick and not the disease he has. The need is to bring man in sync with heaven and earth.

Besides expounding the TCM’s philosophy on life and the motivations behind studying TCM, the drama also expounds important TCM concepts like:

  • the 24 solar terms,
  • the yin-yang nature of the human body,
  • TCM emergency techniques,
  • the intricacies of acupuncture and bone-setting.

Ancient people paid great attention to the division of time. In the Chinese zodiac, the hour of “hai” corresponds to the pig sign, specifically from 9 p.m. to 11p.m. through this period pigs sleep most soundly. Do not go to sleep later than 11 p.m. and wake up at 5 a.m.

Gen Z

This drama underscores the need for the profound heritage of Chinese traditional medicine to be preserved and passed down through generations.

This movie offers a compelling representation of traditional Chinese medicine, shedding light on this rich heritage and fostering deeper comprehension and admiration for it. Simultaneously, it portrays themes of friendship, family dynamics, selfishness, and the importance of forgiveness and love.
