The Bear Lake
The Bear Lake, located in Transylvania near Sovata, is named for its shape, which resembles a stretched bear skin.
Formed on a salt karst in 1875, the surface salt content of the lake is 100 g/l, and it is even higher, 2 to 3 times more, in deeper areas.

It is the largest heliothermal lake in the world and a unique natural wonder in Europe. At the end of June, the water temperature at a depth of 1.5 meters can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius. However, due to swimming activities and fresh water flowing in from nearby streams, the temperature typically drops to around 33-34 degrees Celsius. To maintain the lake’s saline balance, bathing is allowed only at specific times of the day and only in designated areas.
The water from Bear Lake is known to have therapeutic properties, particularly in treating infertility, rheumatic and inflammatory diseases. Additionally, the mud of the lake is used in various treatments.
Surrounding the lake is a salt massif covered with clay, which supports the growth of various trees, including beeches, elms, oaks, hazelnuts, and hornbeams. This area is also home to several protected species of mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles.

Since its creation, The Bear Lake has been “one of the most famous spas in Mureș County, anually attracting thousands of people seeking treatment or just a place to disconnect from the busy daily life.”

Thank you! As you say, visiting different places in Europe often reminded me of places from Romania. This reflection brings to mind the words of the poet Publius Ovidius Naso: “With what does the land of the homecountry enchant everyone,/ That no one can ever forget it?” ❤️
