The Limestones of Ampoița

The Limestones of Ampoiţa are a botanical and geological nature reserve located in western Transylvania, within Alba County.

Covering an area of 0.2 hectares, the reserve sits at a maximum altitude of 393 meters and a minimum altitude of 310 meters.

Known by several names—Pietrele de la Ampoiţa, Pietrele lui Bocioacă, Pietrele Gomnușei, and Stogurile Popii—the reserve features three large, isolated limestone blocks with heights of 44 meters, 27 meters, and 15 meters.

In addition to its geological significance, these stones are a popular tourist attraction due to the stunning landscapes they provide.

  • Geologists suggest that these rocks did not originate from the surrounding mountains but were likely transported from a different location.
  • Local lore tells of ancient monks who trapped a devil that supposedly asked the “lord of darkness” to save him; they blocked the entrance to the underworld with these rocks.
  • The reserve also contains several caves, which can only be explored by experienced climbers due to their depth, over 300 meters. The most notable of these caves is the Bats Cave.
