A little bit of Heaven (214)

The Buhui Lake

Buhui Lake, situated in Caraș-Severin County, within the Aninei Mountains of the Western Carpathians, is recognised as the first underground reservoir and the oldest artificial lake in Romania.

In 1884, a small underground lake was formed by damming the Buhui stream at the exit of the Buhui Cave. Subsequently, between 1907 and 1908, the current dam was constructed upstream of the underground lake.

The lake is 1 km long and a maximum of 27 meters deep. It lies at an altitude of approximately 640 meters, covers a surface area of nearly 10 hectares, and holds a water volume of 500,000 cubic meters.

Known as one of the longest underground water courses in Romania, the Buhui Stream stretches 3,217 meters and emerges at the surface in the Buhui Cave. From there, the stream flows through a tunnel and reaches Anina, the city for which the lake was constructed.

The Buhui Cave is one of the longest caves in the Banat region, with over 3,200 meters explored, and crossed by the same underground stream.

Seen from above, it has the shape of an eagle. Surrounded by beech and conifer forests, Buhui Lake offers a beautiful natural setting ideal for recreation, hiking in the area, fishing, swimming, boating, water sports, and diving.
