The Hole with Fly Cave/ Peștera Gaura cu Muscă
The cave is located in the Danube Gorge at an altitude of 92 meters, approximately 30 meters above the river level, in Caraș-Severin County. Its entrance can be found on the left slope of the gorge, about 3 kilometres downstream from the village of Coronini.
This cave is closely associated with the legend of Iovan Iorgovan, known as “Mace Arm“, who is said to have defeated a 12-headed dragon and the legend of the vampire fly.
The name of the cave derives from the columbac fly (Culex columbacensis), a vampire fly that caused chaos among animals during the Middle Ages. According to legend, this creature was born from the blood that flowed when Iovan Iorgovan killed the last head of the dragon.
This fly was present in the area until the construction of the Iron Gates dam, which caused its disappearance due to habitat modification.
The cave’s entrance, largely obstructed by walls from medieval fortifications, has an oval shape with diagonal lengths of 8 and 4 meters. The access gallery is of medium size and drains a stream. Along the route inside the cave, visitors pass through the Bat Hall and reach a terminal siphon, an area characterised by wall leaks, formations, stalactites, and montmilch deposits. A strong odour of ammonia can be detected in the cave due to the accumulation of bat guano.
However, The Hole with Fly Cave is a site rich in legends and history.
