Beauty and history are my words to describe a place where you would think you were into an old medieval castle: Corvin Castle.

This castle is located in Hunedoara city, Romania. With its amazing architecture and astonishing history behind it, the beauty of Corvin Castle makes it an exceptional example of European architecture. It also explains the reason this castle is chosen as a place for both fairytale and horror movies.

According to www.uncover-romania.com, “a fairytale castle for some, a Gothic masterpiece for others and even a haunted-looking place with great backgrounds for Hollywood movies, Corvin Castle is simply the most impressive castle in Transylvania.”

Here is a list of movies with scenes filmed at Corvin Castle, Hunedoara:

1. François Villon – Outlaw Poet (1987)

It is François Villon’s romantic biography. He was known as an outlaw poet, a bohemian and a wanderer. He lived the life of a vagabond in the company of princes and paupers. A troubled life, because he supported people’s free expression.

2. Nostradamus (1994)

“Nostradamus: I promise nothing, I do what I can.”

Set in France in the sixteenth century, the time of the Black Plague and the Inquisitions, the movie tells the story of Nostradamus. His success in treating the plague and his predictions make his influence rise. It is culminating with his appointment as court physician.

3. Les rois maudits/ The accursed Kings (2005)

It is a French history movie about royalty.

Jacques de Molay is condemned to be burned. He curses the king, his advisor, the pope and the thirteen succeeding generations of their families. There follows half a century of political intrigue, murder and famine, and culminates in the 100 Years War.

4. Bloodrayne (2005)

“Rayne: I thought they would be afraid of me.

Katarin: They only fear what they do not know.”

It is a fantasy action horror film, set in the eighteenth century. Rayne is a Dhampir, half-human, half-vampire, and she escapes from a freak show. She strives to avenge her mother’s rape. In her journey for revenge, she meets two vampire hunters and joins their society.

5. Jacquou le croquant (2007)

It is a French historical movie set in the Dordogne, during the Bourbon restoration. Jacquou is transformed by his vow of revenge into a struggle against injustice.

6. Ghost Rider:

Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

“Johnny Blaze: Why does the devil walk on human form anyway? I have no idea. Maybe he doesn’t know either. Maybe he passes on from body to body, down through history, waiting for the perfect fit. But I know one thing, on Earth, he’s weak. His powers are limited. He needs emissaries to do his dirty work, so he finds them or makes them, using his greatest power, the power of the deal.”

7. Singh Is Bliing (2015)

Singh does not like taking up any responsibility. He has to move to Goa and work with his father’s friend. Here, he meets a woman …

8. Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire (2017)

“A man’s smell is his soul.”

This is a fantasy adventure film. Drago, a dragon, tries to end the rivalry between a brother and his sister. When the Heartfire, the source of Drago’s power is stolen, the siblings must end their rivalry.

9. The Nun (2018)

It is a horror film. A young nun takes her life. A priest and a novitiate are sent by the Vatican to investigate. They uncover the order’s unholy secret.

10. Royal Hearts (2018)

“Hank Pavlik: You know why dog is man’s best friend? Because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.”

The movie’s plot is set in the fictitious ‘Kingdom of Merania’ created through multiple shooting locations in Romania.

Hank is a rancher and his daughter finds out that her father is an heir of a kingdom, Merania. She wants to see it. They travel to Merania with the intention of rejecting the throne but end up staying to save the country.
