The Coloape Rock formations/ Stâncile Coloape
The Coloape rock formations are located in the Gurghiu Mountains, near the town of Toplița in Harghita County.
These volcanic rock columns rise to an altitude of 1,200 meters and have been sculpted over time by rain, wind, and frost.
Their unusual shapes resemble giant mushrooms, stone fungi, or “old women” (babe), leading to names such as the Stone Mushrooms, Stone Fungi, Szekler Stumps, and the Gurghiu “Old Women.”
For those interested in exploring the area, trails begin in and around Toplița, offering a picturesque experience. Dedicated mountain biking routes are also available for cycling enthusiasts.
Springs can be found along the trails, and depending on the season, visitors can gather wild mushrooms and forest fruits, such as wild strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
