Red Lake

The Red Lake is a natural dam lake and the largest natural mountain lake in Romania, formed after a piece of the “killer” mountain slipped due to torrential rain and blocked three streams, one being the Red brook. 

The lake is situated at the base of the Hasmasu Mare Mountain, near Gheorgheni town. 

“Red” name is coming from the reddish alluvia transported by the streams and reddish mountain mirroring in the water.

The lake is also named “the Killer Lake” due to some legends.
