A little bit of Heaven (185)

Poenari Fortress

Poenari Fortress is a historical monument and is located on the top of Cetățuia Mountain, in Arges (Argeș) county.

Known as the citadel of Vlad the Impaler, the fortress is located at an altitude of 850 meters. To get there you have to follow the route through the forest. It is all-natural and beautiful and you only need to climb … 1480 steps. 🙂

Historians working on the project “Corpus Draculianum” state that the tower still visible today was already there in the 14th century. Therefore, Vlad Impaler has not built the fortress but extended the fortifications. “The purpose of the fortress was to be a place of refuge for the ruler, to house the treasure and possibly some important prisoners”.

Wikipedia

A legend says that Vlad the Impaler’s wife, Anastasia threw herself from one of the fortress’s towers, in 1462. She committed suicide because the Turks were near, and she did not want to be a prisoner in their hands.

You can see that legend very well presented in the movie “Rise of Empires: Ottoman Mehmed vs Vlad (season 2)“.

Wikipedia

In the 16th century, an earthquake destroyed the fortress and was never rebuilt.

  1. Thank you Manuela for this lovely article. That sounds like a beautiful hike – that is a lot of steps. The history is fascinating. Sounds like he lead three different times. Famous for impaling people. Sounds like a cruel human. I think that show is on Netflix right now, or the next series which the impaler may be part of the season. Great post and media. Thank you so much. Have a great evening. 🌹

    1. You are more than welcome, Joni! You are right! History is fascinating, and it is a shame that so many things had been lost in time or destroyed by people. Vlad the Impaler ruled three times (as you said) and was cruel. Yet, his cruelty was against traitors, thieves and those who attacked the country. He was one of the greatest rulers Romanians had. Vlad loved the country and defended it even if he was left without help against the ottomans by those who promised that. His cruelty is promoted by the fantasy and horror movies about him. Unfortunately, his part in history became a money machine for those who make those movies. However, I left in my post a link to the trailer of the second season of the show on Netflix you are talking about.
Thank you very much for your visit, comment, and kindness! Have a great day! ❤🔆🌈

      1. Oh I missed that trailer. We got caught up in your article and looked the ruler up last night and began reading even more about him. It is true Hollywood has made a lot of movies about him. We are really looking forward to the show you recommended though. I am hoping that it tells us more about who this leader really was. It was amazing to me that even after being imprisoned by the ottomans he still got out to rule yet again. Thank you so much for sharing this history of your Country. Have a truly wonderful day too!! 🤗🌷

      2. You are more than welcome, Joni! The show is great. Yet, there is also information based on legends instead of documents. For more information you can look on Youtube for “Corpus Draculianum”: https://www.youtube.com/@CorpusDraculianum. They are Historians and offer information about Vlad the Impaler, based on documents they found all over the world. They have Romanian and English videos. For those in Romanian you can turn on CC for subtitles. Many videos are around 10-20 minutes and are not boring. 🙂 Enjoy them!
