Tricule (Tri-Kule) Fortress
The ruins of the medieval fortress of Tricule, which means “three towers” (in Turkish), are situated on the banks of the Danube River in Mehedinți County.
The fortress has been attested since 1419, when King Sigismund of Luxembourg entrusted its defence to the Teutonic Knights through a diploma, being part of a strategic defence system against Turkish incursions. In 1443, the fortress was included in a list of military objectives, and later, it was designated as an Austrian imperial customs office.
Constructed from stone, the towers of the fortress stand 10 to 11 meters high and are 1.40 meters wide. They feature three levels inside, which were used for various purposes, including food storage, surveillance, and defence.
The fortress suffered damage during the construction of the Iron Gates reservoir, and no efforts were made to consolidate the structure for over five centuries.
Partly submerged beneath the river, the fortress is listed on http://www.theworldgeography.com as one of the eight most spectacular submerged buildings in the world.
